NEW DELHI: Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL)—a joint venture between state-run power major NTPC Limited and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL)—has successfully conducted the trial operation of Unit-2 (800 MW) of its Patratu Super Thermal Power Project.

With this addition, PVUNL’s total installed capacity has scaled up to 1,600 MW, subsequently driving the apex NTPC Group past the monumental 90 GW+ total installed capacity milestone.

    Key Highlights

    • State Energy Security: In line with regional development goals, approximately 85% of the power generated from this ultra-modern facility has been allocated directly to Jharkhand, drastically boosting the state’s grid reliability, industrial capacity, and economic growth.

    • Project Progression: The milestone follows the successful commercial operation declaration (COD) of Unit-1 in November 2025 and the full-load testing of Unit-2 in March 2026. PVUNL generated 2,062.90 Million Units (MUs) during FY 2025–26, and civil construction for Unit-3 is pacing ahead with a commissioning target set for FY 2026–27.

    • Eco-Efficient Engineering: The mega power plant leverages cutting-edge Ultra Supercritical (USC) technology. It is built with an advanced Air-Cooled Condenser (ACC) system and a 100% dry ash handling framework to drastically minimize water consumption and ecological footprints.

“The commissioning of Unit-2 marks a transformational step for Jharkhand’s energy landscape… strengthening energy security and supporting industrial and economic growth.” — Ashok Kumar Sehgal, CEO, PVUNL
