NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially kicked off the first phase of Census 2027 on Wednesday by completing his own self-enumeration. This phase marks the beginning of house listing and housing operations across the country.
In a move toward modernizing India’s administrative data, the Prime Minister highlighted that this census marks the first time data collection is being conducted entirely through digital means.
Key Highlights of Census 2027:
-
Digital Transformation: For the first time, the census process has been digitized, allowing for faster data processing and reduced manual errors.
-
Citizen Empowerment: The new system empowers citizens to self-enumerate their household details online, streamlining the participation process.
-
Phase One Focus: The current operations are centered on house listing and housing data, providing the foundational map for the primary population count.
Prime Minister’s Appeal
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister urged all citizens to take an active role in the exercise. “I appeal to the people of India to self-enumerate their household details themselves and participate in the Census process,” he posted, emphasizing that the success of the national project depends on public cooperation.
Strategic Importance
The Census is India’s largest administrative exercise, providing critical data that shapes government policy, resource allocation, and delimitation for the next decade. By shifting to a digital-first approach, the government aims to ensure higher accuracy and accessibility for a population of over 1.4 billion.
