NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a traditional Sanskrit Subhashitam (aphorism) on Monday, emphasizing the sacred relationship between humanity, nature, and sustainable agriculture. In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted how the boundless grace of the natural world, the solar energy of Surya Deva, and the life-giving blessings of rain collectively enrich human lives with health, happiness, and good fortune.
Posting the message on social media platform X, the Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt aspiration for the earth to forever remain vibrant, green, and ecologically prosperous.
The Scriptural Verse
The Prime Minister shared the following ancient verse:
Deconstructing the Translation and Deities Invoked
The shared Subhashitam functions as a multi-layered prayer for universal well-being, invoking specific natural forces personified in Vedic tradition:
-
Savita Deva (The Solar Deity): “May Savita Deva, the radiant protector of the world, be auspicious for us.” This segment invokes the cosmic energy of the sun as a sustaining force that protects ecosystems and drives all terrestrial life.
-
Ushas (The Divine Dawn): “May the shining dawns bring happiness and well-being into our lives.” The dawn symbolizes renewal, clarity, and the daily beginning of productive human endeavor.
-
Parjanya (The Rain Deity): “May Parjanya, the god of rain, bring welfare to our people…” This highlights the critical role of timely monsoons and water security in maintaining social welfare, public health, and food abundance.
-
Kshetrapala / Shambhu (Lord of the Fields): “…and may the gracious lord of the fields, crops, and land grant us happiness and prosperity.” This final invocation focuses directly on agricultural bounty, praying for fertile soil, healthy crop yields, and the economic security of farming communities.
Strategic Message of the Aphorism
The Prime Minister’s choice of this specific verse aligns closely with broader national themes of environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and rural empowerment. By framing solar energy (Savita), water conservation (Parjanya), and agricultural fertility (Kshetra) as sacred, interconnected elements, the message reinforces India’s traditional philosophy of living in perfect harmony with nature rather than exploiting it.
