NEW DELHI — The Ministry of Power has granted formal approval for the export of up to 654 MW of electricity daily to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to mitigate severe power shortages caused by recent flood damage to Nepal’s domestic hydropower infrastructure.

The supply framework, effective from September 13, 2026, through December 31, 2026, allows for power transmission for 18 hours daily (from 00:00 hours to 18:00 hours).

Key Technical Specifications & Transmission Corridors

    • Muzaffarpur – Dhalkebar 400 kV D/c Line: Approved for major cross-border transmission of up to 600 MW.

    • Tanakpur – Mahendranagar 132 kV S/c Line: Approved for supplementary regional transmission of up to 54 MW.

    • Review Timeline: The quantum of power export for calendar year 2027 will undergo formal review by Indian power authorities in December 2026.

    Humanitarian Relief & Energy Cooperation

Severe flooding across Nepal recently caused extensive infrastructure damage to key hydroelectric plants, sharply curtailing the country’s domestic generation capacity and creating an urgent supply deficit.

Reaffirming India’s commitment to bilateral energy cooperation, the Ministry of Power noted that the emergency transmission schedule will support Nepal in stabilizing its national grid while underlying power generation infrastructure undergoes rehabilitation.
