NEW DELHI — In a major regulatory overhaul aimed at standardizing health education across India, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in coordination with the University Grants Commission (UGC), has notified 33 new and 21 restructured Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) degree programs under the purview of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP).
The regulatory update was formalized via UGC Notification No. F.21-12/2026(CPP-II) on August 27, 2026, and published in the official Gazette on August 31, 2026, establishing a unified national framework under the ‘One Nation, One Curriculum’ mandate.
Key Regulatory Features & Curriculum Reforms
The notification enforces strict national standards for degree titles, course durations, and entry requirements under the NCAHP Act, 2021.
-
Standardized Nomenclature: Replaces non-uniform course titles nationwide with globally recognized degree designations across major allied healthcare disciplines.
-
Competency-Based Curricula: Incorporates mandatory clinical internships and hands-on hospital training across 18 competency-based curricula covering 28 distinct professions.
-
Immediate Implementation: State governments, Union Territories, and academic institutions have been directed to mandatorily adopt the new curricula starting from the 2026–27 academic year, with options to launch the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) course.
Master’s Specializations and Covered Disciplines
The framework introduces advanced post-graduate tracks to align clinical training with specialized healthcare demands:
-
Specialization Breakdown: Establishes specialized Master’s degrees across key fields, including 9 specializations in Master of Occupational Therapy, 8 in Master of Physiotherapy, 4 in Master of Medical Laboratory Sciences, 3 in Master of Medical Radiology and Imaging Technology, and 2 in Master of Respiratory Technology.
-
Key Covered Domains: Extends uniform degree standards to Optometry, Emergency Medical Technology, Anaesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology, Nutrition & Dietetics, Dialysis Therapy, Health Information Management, and Physician Associate programs.
Strategic Impact & Global Mobility
Highlighting the reform, Dr. Yagna Unmesh Shukla, Chairperson of NCAHP, emphasized that the notification delivers clear academic progression for students while establishing operational parity across Indian institutions.
By aligning degree nomenclatures with international benchmarks, the Ministry aims to enhance global credential recognition, improve cross-border mobility for Indian healthcare professionals, and bridge critical human resource gaps in primary, secondary, and tertiary care settings.
