VICTORIA — Solidifying New Delhi’s maritime diplomacy in the Indian Ocean, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Independence of Seychelles today as the Guest of Honour.
At the personal invitation of Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, Modi made history as the first Indian Prime Minister to attend the island nation’s national Independence Day celebrations. The historic event uniquely coincides with the marking of 50 years of formal diplomatic ties between India and Seychelles.
Indian Armed Forces Lead Golden Jubilee National Parade
Reflecting a deep-rooted and expanding bilateral defense partnership, Indian military contingents marched alongside Seychellois forces during the high-profile national parade held in the capital city of Victoria to mark the Golden Jubilee.
The Indian contingent featured a joint, multi-service deployment showcasing the depth of India’s security commitments:
-
Assam Rifles: Representing India’s oldest paramilitary force, specialized personnel participated directly in the joint marching columns.
-
Indian Navy & Marching Band: A dedicated naval contingent and the Indian Navy Marching Band led musical and ceremonial performances during the national parade.
-
Naval Fleet Deployment: In keeping with a long-standing maritime tradition, Indian Naval Ships INS Tarkash and INS Ikshak docked at Port Victoria, providing a visual symbol of bilateral defense and surveillance coordination.
Highlighting the Neighborhood First and SAGAR Frameworks
The Prime Minister’s high-profile presence in Victoria underscores India’s active pursuit of its Neighborhood First policy and the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.
By tying the 50th anniversary of Seychellois statehood directly to 50 years of bilateral diplomatic relations, both governments have signaled an intent to scale up future cooperation in maritime domain awareness, economic exclusive zone (EEZ) patrolling, and joint anti-piracy operations across the strategic shipping lanes of the Western Indian Ocean.
